Are Home Phones Threatened with Extinction?

We all remember the days when cell phones were a thing that few needed, it was only for the gadget loving people. In 1992, less than 1 percent of people worldwide had cell phones and only one third of all countries had cellular networks. However, over the years things have changed pretty much. In the 2001 Transportation Statistics Annual Report distributed by the Bureau of Transportation it was reported that by 2001 nearly 120 million Americans subscribed to a cell phone service. This was a dramatic increase since ten years prior in 1991 when the cell phone subscription statistic was 7.6 million. In the middle of 2005, the number of subscribers to cell phone carriers had dramatically increased and the number of total users had reached 2.4 billion.

Some studies claim that cell phones have become an addiction to many. The BBDO survey found that 75 percent of cell phone owners had it turned on and within reach during their waking hours, 59 percent wouldn't think of lending their cell phone to a friend for a day, 26 percent said it was more important to go home to retrieve a cell phone than a wallet. A study by Telephia, a mobile industry tracker, found that Americans averaged 13 hours a month -- with users ages 18 to 24 racking up close to 22 hours.

GE clearly seeing the threat to home phones tried to resuscitate the traditional phone by introducing the Ultra Slim Cordless Phone, a home phone with similar looks to the...Traditional Cell Phone.

The reason for the rapid number of cell phones is said to be the implementation of more towers giving a wider range of cell phone capabilities. There is also the theory that some of the more affordable cell phone marketing strategies, such as pre-paid phones and low-minute plans, are responsible for the increased number of users as well.

Overview on Apple's New iPhone 3G.

Now after much speculation and many rumors whether Apple will release a new iPhone at the start of the summer, finally the new iPhone was released. On June 9, 2008 Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced a 3G version of the device, finally putting to rest months of rumors and speculation. Let's take a few minutes and review the new iPhone, it's features, improvements etc.

iPhone 3G Design
Though the iPhone 3G is thinner at the edges than its predecessor, the phone measures a hair thicker (0.48 inches versus 0.46 inches) in the gut. The other measurements are the same except that it weighs just the slightest bit less (4.7 ounces versus 4.8 ounces). Otherwise, the iPhone 3G shows few cosmetic changes from the front--same display size and resolution, and the single Home button sits just below the screen. We're very pleased to see that Apple has done away with the irritating recessed headphone jack, which now is flush so that you'll be able to use any 3.5mm headphones you like. But turn over the iPhone 3G, and you'll see more significant changes. A black, plastic skin replaces the current silver-aluminum back. The swap may cut the cost, but it might effect the durability of the iPhone 3G. The 8GB model will be manufactured only in black, while Apple promises the 16GB version to be in black and white, however, we were expecting something in the red family, but color is a personal choice. The volume rocker, speaker, charger port, camera lens, microphone, power button and display locking switch do not show any changes. Staff members that got a hands-on with the new device report that it has a similar feel in the hand to the current model, with only one exception, which is the tapered edges.

iPhone 3G offer GPS
This is one feature that was on many iPhone wish lists, with many iPhone fans waiting for the day that the iPhone will offer GPS. While the current iPhone location services find your position via nearby cell phone towers and satellites, the iPhone 3G uses Assisted GPS supplemented by satellites, just like regular GPS devices do. It also offers live tracking so you can monitor your progress as you drive or walk.

Third-party apps on iPhone 3G
The iPhone 3G will support the collection of apps available through the iPhone SDK. Apple promises to open an apps store in as early as July 2008. Gaming apps will most probably be prominently featured.

Corporate support on iPhone 3G
People with busy working schedules will benefit greatly from the iPhone 3G since it offers support for Microsoft Exchange Server. Push e-mail, contacts and calendar, remote wipe, global contacts access, and auto-discovery will now be available on the iPhone. That's another great addition as it puts the iPhone in the hands of a whole new class of corporate users who now will be able to get their work e-mail on the iPhone.

Support of 2.0 Software
Since the latest iPhone will support the 2.0 software, additional new features will continuously show up. Softwares will include such as contacts search, iWork document support, the capability to view PowerPoint attachments, bulk move and delete, a scientific calculator in landscape mode, parental controls, and support for 16 languages. You'll also be able to use a graffiti-style application for entering characters in Asian languages.

Battery life of the iPhone 3G
Last year Apple's CEO Steve Jobs said that Apple had not included 3G in the first iPhone because it would have made too many compromises with the handset's battery life. But now it appears that Apple has solved that problem. The iPhone 3G promises a solid 5 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of 2G talk time, 5 hours of 3G Internet time, 6 hours of Wi-Fi Internet time, 7 hours of video playback, 24 hours of audio playback, and 12.5 days standby time. The audio and video times are unchanged from the original iPhone.
