Poor Reception - Is it My Carrier or My Phone?

Most of us enjoy blaming our carrier for any dropped calls or lost connections we experience. But realistically speaking, cell phone carriers are not always at blame.

There are a few conditions that can interfere with a cell tower's signal, thus causing poor reception. I will list t them bellow:

The Weather
Cell phone radio waves are known to travel best when the air is moist, but not in humid conditions. On very humid days you may notice that you are experiencing poor reception. On the other hand, on dry days the range your cell phone can pick up may be a slightly shorter, but this may not be so noticeable, since dry weather only cause a minor effect.

Storms, with heavy rainfall and lightening will effect your reception the most. Exceptionally humid days rank number two.

Buildings
Multi-story buildings are constructed of concrete, steel, granite, or other solid materials, which interfere with a cell tower's signal.

If you're in the central part of a city with numerous skyscrapers around you, and are experiencing poor reception, this is probably the reason to blame. You might want to utilize a cell phone signal booster or get yourself some sort of cell phone antenna kit or a cell phone signal amplifier.

Terrain
Mountains, hills and sometimes even trees can be an obstacles that interfere with your cell phone's signal. If you're in a very mountainous or hilly region, then you might also want to utilize one of the solutions mentioned above.

So next time you are thinking to switch carriers because of poor reception, make sure to first see the root of the problem. If you are experiencing poor reception even after taking the above steps, then it might be wise to find another carrier. But make sure that you are not going from a bad carrier to a worse one. Ask family, Friends and colleagues if they are happy with their carrier. If you are in contract you might find our article on how to avoid early termination penalties.
